Vegetables in Arabic

Background and Aims: Watermelons, Citrullus species (Cucurbitaceae), are native to Africa and have been cultivated since ancient times. The watermelon plant is an annual that grows well in hot climates. The sweet juicy flesh may be reddish, white, or yellow; the flesh color, the fruit’s shape, and the rind’s thickness depend on the variety.

Tomatoes

This is an essential ingredient in Arab cuisine. You can roast it in the oven, or use it as a garnish in salads and sauces. Some foreigners have noted that Arab home-cooked cuisine with a sauce is either white (based on yogurt or dairy) or red (based on tomatoes).

We sincerely hope you have enjoyed this presentation of typical Arab vegetables. We strongly advise you to try Arabic cuisine if you get the chance. You’ll find some of the most amazing (and affordable) meals in this cuisine!

Potatoes and Onions

Due to their starchy nature, potatoes are a substantial and satisfying element in Arab cuisine, keeping you full for a long time.

Onions add flavor to almost every dish. In some cases, they are served fresh with your mezza (a selection of appetizers similar to those in Western cuisine), combined with nearly any dish you can imagine, or used as a garnish (such as fried onions on top of mujadara, an Arab vegan dish).
