Adhan (Call to Prayer)
Definition:
The Adhan is a call to prayer for Muslims. It is recited five times a day at the beginning of each of the five obligatory prayers. Traditionally, the muezzin (caller to prayer) would recite the Adhan from a high place, such as the minaret or the roof of the mosque. Nowadays, the muezzin can use amplification devices, making it easier for them to perform the Adhan. Bilal ibn Rabah, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad, was the first muezzin in Islam.
Words of the Adhan:
The Adhan consists of fifteen phrases:
- Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greater) (four times)
- Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah) (twice)
- Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah (I bear witness that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah) (twice)
- Hayya ‘ala as-Salah (Come hasten to prayer) (twice)
- Hayya ‘ala al-Falah (Come hasten to success) (twice)
- Allahu Akbar (Allah is Greater) (twice)
- La ilaha illa Allah (There is no god but Allah)
How to Perform the Adhan:
- The muezzin begins by saying “Allahu Akbar” four times in a clear and audible voice.
- He then says “Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa Allah” twice, observing the rules of tajweed (recitation of the Quran).
- He then says “Ash-hadu anna Muhammadan rasul Allah” twice, in the same manner.
- He then says “Hayya ‘ala as-Salah” twice, raising his voice and increasing his enthusiasm.
- He then says “Hayya ‘ala al-Falah” twice, in the same manner.
- He then returns to saying “Allahu Akbar” twice.
- Finally, he says “La ilaha illa Allah”.

- He must begin the Adhan by saying “Allahu Akbar”.
- He must clearly separate the phrases.
- He must raise his voice so that people can hear him.
- He must recite the takbir (Allahu Akbar), the shahada (testimony of faith), and the hayya ala (call to prayer) slowly and deliberately.
