Common Arabic Prefixes and Suffixes

Arabic prefixes and suffixes share many traits and don’t follow a set pattern when it comes to how they should be attached to Arabic words. Arabic words typically have a “root” that defines the word’s fundamental meaning using three consonants.

Additional vowels, prefixes, and suffixes are used in addition to those three root letters to achieve the intended meaning inflection. Countless words can be made from any set of basic letters.

Prefixes and Suffixes

Arabic Prefixes and Suffixes are important grammar rules in sentence structure. Prefixes can be categorized into the following groups:

  • The Arabic definite article “al- الـ” is a prefix. It makes adjectives and indeterminate nouns definite.
  • The prefix “wa- و” is appended to the second word and functions as a coordinating conjunction, akin to the word “and.” It may be employed at the start of the phrase.
  • The prefix “fa- \ف” denotes order and functions as a coordinating conjunction as well. It can also be used to signify “so/therefore” at the beginning of a statement.
  • The prepositional prefix “le- لـِ” denotes “to,” when combined with different verbs, it can have distinct meanings.
  • Prefix “be- بـِ,” which also functions as a preposition and indicates “with,” can also mean different things depending on the verb with which it is used.
  • Classical Arabic uses the prefix “ka-كـَ,” which denotes “as/like/such as,” more frequently than Modern Standard Arabic.
  • The prefix “sa -س,” meaning “will,” denotes the future with verbs in the present tense.
  • While “فسوف”  denotes “the distant future” and can be translated as “later / after a while,” the prefix س denotes “the near future” and can be translated as “soon.”

An Overview of Suffixes in Arabic

We employ the following suffixes in Arabic.”The -ah suffix designates a noun or adjective’s feminine form.

  • Pronouns in possession: To show possession, they are appended to the end of words (e.g. my/your/his.. etc.). EArabiclearning covers these.
  • Object pronouns: These denote a pronoun in an object position and are appended to the end of verbs, such as me, him, or them.

There are several different prefixes and suffixes. This word is a suffix, which means it is appended to the end of a word. Let’s examine it in conjunction with, say, This is the initial illustration:

the term “house,” بَيت (baīt).

بَيتي (baītī)

Examples and Uses

Prefixes and suffixes are examples of affixes in Arabic. Prefixes are put at the start of the words, with infixes located in the center of the sentence and suffixes affixed at the conclusion. As an illustration, the Arabic term altalibat (الطالبات) signifies “female students.”

Compared to languages like Malay and Slovene, Arabic has eight prefixes, making it a smaller prefix set. But in Arabic, a word can have up to three prefixes added simultaneously. For example, the word “بالوالدين” has three prefixes (ب, و, ل).

Word structure, or morphology, is the study of the structure, functions, and laws of meaningful units of language, which might be individual words or word pieces like affixes of different kinds. Morphemes are significant constituents and subcomponents at the word level.

Arabic morphology is extremely systematic, although it differs from English morphology in some very fundamental ways. Some of the basic ideas in theoretical morphology have been greatly influenced by Arabic and the Semitic languages.

Practice Exercises

Prefixes and suffixes are used by all of us in daily writing and communication. But the majority of us use them without even realizing it or giving them any thought!

Prefixes are groups of letters added to a word’s beginning, and suffixes are groups of letters added to a word’s ends. Some words contain both a prefix and a suffix.

  • Spelling rules must be kept in mind while adding various prefixes and suffixes.
  •  Prefix or suffix alters the meaning of the word to which it is appended!

Put prefixes and suffixes for these words:

1- كتاب

2- سيارة

3- قلم

4- بيت
